22 – The Captain : 4th Day
But they didn't. We drove round and round for about three hours. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. I stayed up until midnight hoping for a call from Captain Maud, but she never phoned.
We're sitting having a good breakfast in case something develops and we don't get the chance to eat later. Eat when you can. I'm as blue as blue as can be. If Piet and Clara weren't here with me, I'd be climbing the walls. My imagination is working overtime, conjuring up scenes of rape, humiliation and even murder. Kempton has grown horns and a tail. Every time I think of him he’s larger than the time before, and Meredith is shrinking. Piet’s contacts haven’t yielded any further information.
My phone's ringing. Captain Maud. News at last.
“I put my men onto re-checking the rental sites this morning. Good thing I did because the database of one of the agencies updated overnight to show that Kempton took out a short lease on a house in Bryanston the day he arrived in Johannesburg. Apparently, the clerk has been off for a couple of days because her child was sick.”
“So you have an address? Have you found Meredith and Sukey?”
“One question at a time, Captain Maynard. Yes, we have the address. The local police are on their way there as I speak. So no, we haven't found the girls yet.”
“Can you give us the address, Captain?”
“If you promise to stay out of the way of the police ...”
“Of course.”
“It's 109 Devonport Crescent, Bryanston.”
Piet gasps. “Crikey. That's only a few houses along the street.”
I thank Captain Maud and switch off my phone. Piet is already on the way to the front door. I throw on my jacket and follow him. Clara brings up the rear.
Piet does a racing start, throwing up swirls of gravel behind us and we speed up the hill to the gate. The gate opens so slowly that I'm tempted to get out and push it. At last, we're through. Piet accelerates like a Formula I champion. We swerve round the next corner. Piet's going so fast he has to slam on the brakes to miss the cluster of police vehicles crowded outside the gates of the target house.
A police captain is ushering a man in civilian clothes out of one of the police cars and towards the gates. I jump out and run over. An officer stops me. Tells me to stay back. I explain who I am and he lets me through.
The civilian takes a notebook out of his pocket and keys the pass code into the lock. The estate agent. The police captain notices me and tells me to leave. Once again I explain who I am telling him Captain Maud has given me permission to be present. He nods, but says, “Stay back until I give you permission to approach.”
He gets back in his car, taking the agent with him. I'm about to stand aside when he gestures to me to get in the back.
